Self storage myths busted

Every industry has its fair share of common myths and misconceptions about the services it offers, and the self-storage industry is no different. Some of the myths can make choosing storage, or even considering self-storage, a minefield of indecision, but we’re here to help.

We’ve taken some of the most common myths from the self-storage industry and debunked them to show you exactly what self-storage is like, instead of what you may have been told.

Myth: You have to commit to a storage unit for a long period of time

Fact: Our storage units are incredibly flexible when it comes to renting. You can choose to rent for as little as a month, ideal if you’re simply moving house and need to store things while you transition, or are carrying out some DIY.

Even if you do commit to a longer period of time, as long as you give two weeks’ notice, you can change your self-storage rental agreement at any time. You’ll only ever pay for the storage you need.

Myth: You can store anything in a storage unit

Fact: While you can keep most objects in a storage unit, from your road bike to your winter clothes, there are a few safety restrictions to what can be stored.

Some items, such as fireworks, gas bottles and flammable materials are on our No Store list, as is anything living, such as plants, and any hazardous chemicals.

Myth: You can live/stay in the storage unit

Fact: It’s not possible to sleep or stay in any of our storage units. Just as a hotel is a resting place for a human, a storage unit is a resting place for your belongings, and these two aren’t interchangeable. You wouldn’t rent a hotel room for a week to keep your exercise equipment and old family photos in it, would you?

Myth: Self-storage facilities aren’t secure beyond the padlocks

Fact: All our self-storage stores at Titan Storage are equipped with a state-of-the-art security system and each unit has its own individual alarm to keep your possessions as safe as possible. We also have 24/7 CCTV surveillance and each unit receives a unique padlock so no one can access your unit.

Beyond that, we also restrict access to the storage unit floors via a lift with a code – you will receive your own unique access code when you agree to store with us.

Myth: Self-storage units are expensive

Fact: There are a range of storage unit sizes available to fit all budgets and flexible rental periods, so you will only need to pay for the storage when you need it.

Myth: I don’t need insurance for my unit

Fact: If your belongings are valuable enough to warrant storage, they’re valuable enough to need insurance. While our stores are safe, secure and clean, the insurance will protect against any accidental occurrences.

At Titan Storage, we offer insurance cover under our Storage Open Cover Policy, which is specifically designed for storage. You will simply pay a price for cover based on full replacement value.

Myth: Storage units dirty and dingy

Fact: Even though your storage unit will be located in a building with lots of other units and footfall, there is no reason for your unit to be dirty. All storage companies have routine pest control management to avoid any unwanted visitors and every unit will be cleaned after the previous owner has moved out so it will be sparkling clean when you move in.
